A grieving Islamic Sunday school teacher begins to question his reality when the stories he teaches follow him home.

Director’s Statement

The idea for this film came to me at a time when I wanted to stop running from faith. When I was going through a dark time and needed comfort. When I sought to understand my religion in a way other than how it had been presented to me as a child. This film is my way of reconciling everything I was feeling at the time: the loss, the confusion, the futile desire to understand the unknown.

AYAT, an Arabic word which translates to “verses”, tells the story of Adil, an Islamic Sunday School teacher, who is grieving the loss of his son. Adil has always been a devout Muslim and has understood his religion through the many stories and verses from the Quran. But when he returns home from the mosque one day, he slowly discovers that he is losing his grip on reality, and the faith he held onto no longer seems to be holding him.

Tonally and visually, AYAT is inspired by films like FIRST REFORMED and THE FATHER. It mixes the real and the imagined, fable and truth, all to give a portrait of a character that is struggling to come to terms with loss.
